She has been offered a place at Mambwe Boarding Secondary School some 60 kilometres distance from her home. She’ll need to board at school but Ruth is looking forward to this experience as do most kids in Zambia. Boarding means being free from the everyday problems at home, having three meals a day, electric light to study by, and the chance to join your friends in study groups. As a generalisation pupils who board at school do better than those whom live at home.
Ruth’s family are poor and survive by subsistence farming. She has an older sister who attends Mfuwe Day Secondary School as a day pupil and her fees are paid by her uncle. She also has a younger brother who is 12 years old and in grade 6 at Mfuwe Primary.
